Episode 8: Enraptured

The coffee machine made its accustomed rattling as every morning. A fresh roast poured into the cup, which Paul grabbed and took to the living room. Usually during that part of the day he relaxed due to his activities taking place in the afternoon, so its first hours were tranquil for him. For once it was different. He leaned by the window sipping his coffee, analyzing the last four months. His existence had been easygoing, what with working voluntarily and not out of necessity, as well as having an active social agenda. He couldn't complain, he was privileged. But it had become a drag, doing the same every two or three weeks. There was more to life than artistic events and fancy parties. He was already aware of it, but finally realized it once he met her. There she was, a person who cared not about these matters but gave importance to much simpler details. Someone understanding, who still showed joy for little things others didn't take notice of. Not to mention her disposition towards everything and everyone. She was the purest of innocence, that girl. And yet there was this strange quality about her, a womanly sensuality any man could sense. He knew it well, having that sensation everytime he saw her. No doubt it was the combination of the child-like naïve nature, and the precocious sexual appeal which made her so irresistible. There was that detail as well: her youth. She was really too young for him, and he was very conscious of his own age, which made him consider she probably viewed him as some mischievious elderly. Even with the years that separated them, this feeling was inevitable in him. He couldn't help it, he was besotted ever since the first time he saw her. Knowing her only deepened it.

"And now I don't know what to do." He discussed his uncertainty with Mick when the former visited the latter in his house two weeks later. Left all for himself due to his missus and daughters being absent, he was able to speak freely of that which perturbed his friend. "Right, so you do remember she just turned 26 years old." "Yes yes, I know, that's what hurts me the most, the age difference. It wouldn't be such a problem were she in her forties, or even in her mid thirties, but she's practically a little girl for me. And yet I've fallen madly for that little girl." "But are you sure it's love Paul? She has yet so much to live, you have life experience to spare, basically you're both in different stages. What makes you think a relationship between you is possible?" "She's mature in other aspects. Her personality, her views of life, even her artistic tastes are very grown up. I mean, if you've listened to our conversations you'd notice she's truly an adult. Even if she's such a young girl in every other aspect, she's grown up mentally." "That I don't question it, she knows where she's standing. Now, have you thought of Damon?"

Paul went silent. He hadn't really stopped to consider his sentiments. He knew he felt similarly for her but according to his observations, there was nothing more than a mere platonic relationship, even romantic gestures included. "There's nothing serious between them." "How do you know?" "Melissa hasn't said so, and neither has Damon. Of course, I haven't asked them." "Why? Do you fear they might say yes?" "Well..." "You suspect there's something, right? Problem is, you don't want to admit it. Or rather you don't want to admit you're probably not meant to be." "I hope there's nothing but I don't know..." Another doubt crossed Mick's mind. "Do you even know what she feels for you?" Paul sighed loudly and ellicited the resignated truth: "She sees me only as a friend. And I don't blame her for it. I approached her from the beginning in a friendly manner but eventually my heart beat any logic left in me. And again there's the whole age difference. She's so young for me, I'm too old for her. I'm sure she perceives me as some funny old geezer, especially after the incident on her party. But it was an impulse, really." "I can imagine how she reacted." "Stunned, she didn't even kiss me back." "Again, can you blame her?" "Not really." When Mick finalized voicing his opinion, it was Paul who justified his choice. "If you could see her through my eyes, Mick. She's wonderful in every single way. And she's so beautiful. The way those big eyes of hers lit up when she receives good news, how she smiles at everyone, even her laugh is adorable. And she cares, you know. She's such a good listener, at least with me she is, and supporting with everybody. She's just remarkable, an incredible person..." Mick listened attentively but had a thought: "If it's not love, he certainly has strong feelings for her."

When she saw him in the doorway, the color wiped out of her face. She seriously considered closing the door and leave it at that. Instead she let him in silently. "I'm sorry for coming unexpectedly but I need to talk to you." His pace was aghast, notions that had been troubling him for the last days unable to be delayed anymore. Melissa, on the other hand, did not look so keen at the idea. "Listen, Paul..." "No, please don't say anything yet, at least until you listen to me. I owe you an explanation..." "You don't owe me anything..." "Yes I do, dearest, I've offended you terribly and I'm sorry for that. But at the same time I won't apologize for kissing you. I did it because I love you." Had it not been for her friends' assumptions, this abrupt declaration would've come as a bombshell. His words however, still carried significance for finally being acknowledged by him. "Paul, please..." "No, don't say a word yet. I've had too much on my chest for a long time and I won't stop now." She saw it again, that fixed look directed straight at her. Everytime she saw him with others his eyes were placid, his poise serene; this was not the case so undoubtedly she was the cause for his present uneasiness, making her feel guilty all around. He sat up straight and explained himself thoroughly.

"You mesmerized me from the first instant, when I saw you back in April. You just stood out from the crowd and I couldn't keep my eyes off you. I was glad when I finally met you later that night and rejoiced every second of it, convinced I would never see you again and would become a precious memory with time. Can you imagine what it was seeing you weeks later? Coincidence or not, all I know is it happened for a reason. The more conversations we had, the more my feelings for you became what they're now. Ever since I've been tormenting myself for never opening up to you for fear of being rejected or receiving a mocking remark, which would be even worse than being rejected because I wouldn't stand it, coming from you. Most especially, I observed your fascination for Damon and seeing he was, rather is, quite smitten with you, I chose not to speak, painfully watching how your mutual affection grew everyday. But that night, on your party, I couldn't handle it anymore. Seeing you dance set my heart racing like never before. Then discovering you actually share birthday with Joe, my dear friend...Add to it everything I've felt for the last four months and that was it, you drove me to madness. That's why I kissed you my dear, because my feelings could not be held any longer. And I know what you're thinking, that I'm too old for you but I'd like to think it's not an impediment to have something..." Melissa needed to barge in, to say anything in order to interrupt his loving words. "Paul, it's not just the age difference, there are many things: our ways of thinking, our interests, our upbringings, the fact that your friend Damon, 'cause that's what he is, your friend, is actually interested in me..." "Did he say he loves you?" She reminisced he never expressed those exact words. He said he liked her a lot but nothing more than that. Still his attitudes and actions proved so. "He has shown it." "I have as well, but now I'm saying it..." "Paul, wait. Honestly, why do you wanna get involved with someone like me? I'm lazy, naïve, flawed, and you're the complete opposite of that. I'm so not worth it, you don't need such a loser in your life." "Melissa, I'm not sure you realize how incredible you are. It's precisely that innocence of yours that stole my heart, and I like your intelligence and your way of being. There's no one like you out there, your uniqueness won me over. And yes, you may be very young for me but I don't care, you're amazing all the same and I love you. At this point I couldn't give a flying fuck if the whole world knows it. I don't even care what Damon thinks. All I care for is you, dearest, and I'll do anything to win your heart..." His conversation abruptly ceased, his lips sealed by Melissa's, who found herself so overwhelmed by Paul's candidness something dictated her to do so. He was surprised by her reaction but immediately responded to her kiss, gently grabbing her back while savouring her full, parted lips. All of a sudden she pushed him back, her face the mask of horror. "Holy shit", she exclaimed. "Melissa..." "You should go now. Yes, it's time for you to leave." "What? But honey..." "No Paul, please go." She walked to the door promptly, shoving him out but with no violence. "There's nothing to be ashamed of really..." "Yes there is, please go now, I can't..." She closed the door, turning around and covering her mouth with her finger tips, completely shocked at her impulsiveness. At the other side, Paul stared at the entry, placing his hands over it to anyhow grasp what remained of her on them before exiting the building.

Episode 7: Can't Save Me From Madness

Early morning rolled over London, its first rays of sunlight signaling the start of a new day. Melissa turned off the alarm clock grumbling for the abrupt interruption of sleep. Getting ready for work wasn't her favorite thing to do but somehow she needed to pay her diversions and the bills. In addition the first period of the day was not her best, waking up in a bad mood constantly as she tried to clear up and focus on her tasks. Her job truly was boring. As much as she liked having only the most essential responsibilities a receptionist was usually due, seeing people enter or exit the building after several hours became quite stressing. Transfering phone calls, distributing copies for every department, typing reports for her boss as well as for coworkers and clients. These few duties for a total of 8 hours from Monday to Friday. Was she ever thankful for her burgeoning personal life.

Damon sipped his herbal tea and Melissa drank from her coffee whilst narrating her trip to Las Vegas. He had terribly missed her. Those days out in Europe and the Middle East were entertaining but without her they lacked excitement. He did have a chance to call her over but decided against it to give her time to rest, as well as ponder on their situation. Constant nights out withstanding, had she thought of him? Did she miss him even with lots of surely good looking guys on the streets, hotels and clubs? "Yes, I could've slept with anyone but I didn't, I couldn't. Those guys are Zero compared to you." How he loved it when he heard things like that. But was it his ego doing its work, or the arousal caused by her dulcet tone? "So anyway, I had a great time with my friends but I couldn't wait to come back. There's work to do, places to go to, birthdays to celebrate...oh wait, there's only mine coming up." This last comment was made to herself in murmur but Damon heard her and exclaimed: "Oh really, is your birthday coming up?" "Yeah, it's on August 21st. I mean, the 21st of August. Sorry, gotta remember you mention the day first, just like we do in Spanish." "So you're turning 26. That we have to celebrate it." "Oh no please, I don't want you to spend money on me, it's not worth it..." "Don't say that, you are very much worth it love. And who says I'll spend a million quid? It'll only be what's essential so don't you worry about it dear." "You sure?" As a sign of reassurement, he leaned forward and kissed her tenderly. "Do I look uncertain?" His confidence convinced her and there was no need for an answer. She kissed him back and he just let himself go, not caring about anything around him except for the woman in front of him.

The days went by quicker than expected, summer bustling over the capital like never before. Soon enough August arrived, which brought in Melissa's birthday and eventually the celebration Damon spent weeks planning. As promised, much was not spent but that didn't mean an effort wasn't made to give a memorable party. Considering her ideas and wishes, he kept it simple: a get-together with friends at the Groucho, the Soho club usually frequented by musicians. Melissa secretly wished for this to be the chosen location so when she arrived with Damon, she was beyond surprised. He was really endeavouring to win her over. "Are you trying to impress me?" He reflected for an instant before he responded: "Yes." "Well, so far so good." She went on to receive congratulating hugs and some small but thoughtful gifts. From her wide smile and the twinkle in her eyes, Damon sensed he had definitely accomplished causing an impact on her.

The music took on a whole different vibe. At least it's what it seemed to Melissa, who had the urge to start moving rhythmically even standing alone by the bar. Making sure no one looked at her, she moved her hips and shoulders thoroughly and closed her eyes going with the flow. She felt sexy, what with the music, her dancing, the environment around her. She was relieved to not be seen but was unconciously wishing for certain someone to be teased by her moves. Little did she know she was been observed with ardent eyes, desire fully awoken over the woman's sensual sway. How come someone so young could cause such feelings? They found themselves in her hands, willing to do anything for her. The question was if she realized this.

She made her way through the crowd, going up the stairs in order to go to the restroom. She did not exactly dance nonstop, but the heat was suffocating due to the place being packed so she needed to refresh herself. Once inside she opened the tap and got her neck and shoulders dampen. Ah, much better. Her hands proceeded to grab more water when the door swung open. In walked Paul and stopped on his track when he saw her. "Um, you do realize you're in the girls' bathroom." "I know." He closed the door behind him, never tearing his sight away from her. She had never seen him this way before, his body completely stiff and his stare intense, fixed on her. "Are you okay?" "Yeah, I'm fine, never been better." But his body language remained as before. Melissa started feeling anxious and not in a good way. He was just standing there still, with that unblinking stare. What was he to do? He started walking towards her, edging closer and closer. "Paul..." Next thing she knew, he grabbed her shoulder and gave her the most eager kiss she had ever received. Not only his lips, but his whole self exteriorized his deep yearning for her. As sudden as it appeared, he broke off and realizing what he did, was only able to mumble: "Forgive me. Just...forgive me", and left the restroom hastily. Melissa was too stunned to react. Her friends were right. How long had he been feeling so? "Oh my God, he likes me. He really likes me..."

Episode 6: In Between

Luggage, done. Shoulder bag, done. Passport and Visa, done. She had everything set for her trip to the United States, a journey she had been planning for weeks. Her boss only gave his employees one during the summer to have their respective break, week she would use to visit friends overseas. Much organizing needed to be done in the previous days she had to remain in the city in order to get it all ready. Hence why she couldn't accept Damon's invitation to Spain, Lebanon and Syria, next three stops for the band. He was disappointed for her refusal but he understood this was the right thing to do. Their time down south had been marvelous, the best in months. He spoke to her about his feelings and she seemed to respond equally. But both were aware of their particular situation. They were not a formal couple, at least not yet. Now it was up to distance, time, and especially her, to decide what was to happen next. Hopefully it would benefit him.

Long, exhausting and exasperating. Such had been the trip and Melissa was grateful for finally setting foot over American soil. Since she would only remain for a week there were no major issues on her stop in Immigration. What seven days they would be though. Her two friends Diana and Gina, coming from California and Florida respectively, would all meet with her in no other than Las Vegas, a place they've always wanted to go to. Seven days of excitement just ahead and she couldn't wait for them to start.

Their encounter was joyful to say the least. After months of communicating through the internet they were finally able to meet in person and catch up in their respective lives. From then on meals were taken, malls were invaded, hotels and attractions were visited. As was expected they attended as many bars and night clubs as possible, dancing the night away and having the most fun one could experience in such a bustling city. The girls became restless during their stay, never stopped partying. It was the perfect way to celebrate their being young.

The shrill ring of the phone made her stop her process of putting on her pajamas. How weird, in the middle of the night? It dawned on her instantly it might've been 3:30 am in the Pacific coast, but it was already full morning in Britain, the only place she could expect a call from. Did something happen? Or maybe it was just Damon wanting to talk for a few minutes? She prayed nothing was wrong as she lifted the receiver. Sure enough, she had a phone call from London. "Oh God, I hope everything's alright..." "Hello, Melissa?" The voice at the other end startled her. "Paul?" Shocking, was it really him calling? "Wow, you recognized me immediately." Her initial surprise was instantly replaced with a girly chuckle as she explained: "You have a very recognizable voice, maybe you haven't noticed." "Ha. Anyway, how've you been? How's Vegas?" "It's been so much fun, this is such a cool city...wait a minute, how did you get this number?" "Where else? From the email you sent Jamie telling where you're staying. I was with him when he first read it. I know it was for him and Damon but I hope you don't mind my prying in and calling you." She had to admit it was pleasant to hear him, even while she thought it was Damon at first. "Paul, you're so not annoying. On the contrary, I love talking with you so your call was a nice closing to the night." About four silent seconds passed on until he answered in a mellow tone: "Thank you sweetheart, that made my day." He asked her of the things she had been doing in the States, responding and jokingly swearing she hadn't slept with anyone even when the circumstances encouraged it. Overall it was a comforting way to go to bed, listening his voice.

Like any other woman with her friends, she told them about Paul's late night phone call and proceeded to explain how she met him, Damon and the others, as well as the subsequent unbelievable events. They were attentive, listening with no interruptions to her conversation. It wasn't until she was finished that they gave their opinions on the subject. Undoubtedly Damon liked her as much as she liked him. However, by her account of things, there was a slight possibility, if not a high one, Paul was interested in her the same way. Especially considering his attentions and demeanor towards her. Plus, his phone call? Only a person with romantic intentions would bother to call someone located on the other side of the world. Or he's such a close friend he merely wanted to say hi; such was Melissa's hypothesis. "Besides", she added, "how could he possibly have feelings for me? There's no fucking way, he's too old for me. A man his age could never love someone too young, especially as crazy as me." Her friends reminded her the old saying: love is ageless. Being dozens of years her senior couldn't be an obstacle for him to aspire something much deeper with her.

Damon's angelic face appeared in her sleep, allowing her to reminisce all they have lived together since they met. The glances, the smiles, their conversations, their gestures, Glastonbury. Only in her wildest dreams did she imagine so intense experiences in such a short period of time. Yes, she cherished every single one of them. All of a sudden a manly, mature face crept in grinning at her tenderly. What was Paul doing there? Why did he show up everywhere she was? This didn't necessarily bother her but she couldn't explain his constant presence in her life. From their conversations together she perceived him as a humble person not giving much importance to his rockstar status as well as the fame and adulation adjacent to it. All in all he was someone she hoped to stay friends with. Did he have a romantic inclination towards her? She kept denying it, assured of his amicable ways. Because that is what he was, a friend. Right?

Episode 5: Ecstasy of a Kiss

As was accustomed every year, the county of Somerset became swarmed by travelers from all over Britain and the world. Carrying sleeping bags, tents, clothes for the week, cameras and water bottles, from youngsters to elders, people invaded the never-ending land that was Worthy Farm just the way it has been done for 40 years. This being her second journey to southern England, Melissa was as excited as last year. It was one of her dreams to attend the local festival and thanks to Blur she was able to go back and forth that huge estate even in her role as roadie. Bands she would've never thought seeing live, art installations new to her, everything seemed pulled right out of her imagination. Of course the highlight of watching Blur at its finest form was something worth keeping for life, definitely an unforgettable experience. And this time was no different: at the very last minute, Gorillaz became the headliner for the main stage on Friday night. Something related to the other band's singer getting his back injured during rehearsal made this sudden change possible. Damon invited her over, claiming he wanted to see her again after their night out in Cannes. Melissa needed not to analyze: he was clearly interested in her in more than a friendly way, she perceived it in his eyes and actions. And she was glad to know so because she felt the same as well.

He welcomed her with arms wide open, lifting her even with her having a few extra pounds. When he saw her the day just got all the better. He was having a great time on rehearsal but her presence improved his mood considerably. It had been a long time since he felt this way for someone, years actually. There was something about her that made him act differently to his real self. She was smart, sweet, straight-forward, not to mention gorgeous. Was he in love? He didn't know. All he was aware of was of his feelings towards her. He was fortunate to sense she was responding positively to his courtship so at least there was hope for an opportunity on something else with her.

In terms of bands with radio hits, Gorillaz's performance was not as fortunate as expected. However, they displayed a boldly artistic show that challenged the audience's perspective on live concerts. Melissa was grateful for being able to witness it, particularly since she saw it all from a side of the stage. She had the time of her life, singing the songs and moving rhythmically to the beat whilst flashing her smiles to Damon, oblivious to her coquetry, having to keep the audience interested. But he compensated it by spending his time with her right after the gig was finished. Coincidentially, Mick Jones's birthday landed on that same Friday, the reason a small party was held afterwards that same night. Naturally everyone from the crew was present. Melissa strolled around, observing the people having a good time when she spotted Paul in a far corner, distant from everybody else. She found it odd and went his way. Maybe he was in need of good company.

"Why so lonely?" He turned his head and saw her standing a bit close to him. "Oh hey." "Came over to check on you. Are you okay?" "Yeah, I'm okay honey." "You sure? Why are you alone then?" "I don't know, I just don't feel comfortable." "In this party?" "On the festival." "Really? Why?" "I'm not in my element. Never liked it here, it's too hippie and sold out. Joe used to tell me to come over, he used to be here every year, but he never persuaded me." "I had no idea you hated it here." "I don't exactly hate it, I just don't feel identified with it. The Notting Hill carnival, now that is somewhere special." "I've heard of it before but didn't go last year, stupidly." "You should definitely go this time. In fact, we could go together. I may serve you as a guide." Melissa eyed him for a second. Kind of an impulsive invitation, wasn't it? She let go off her contemplation as she responded: "Yeah sure, sounds fun." "Okay, it's settled then. Trust me, you're gonna love it."

She saw him as his hand touched her shoulder while with the other he offered her a bottle of Coke to her. "Sorry for the interruption, did I miss something?" "No Damon, you did not interrupt." Melissa accepted the bottle as the latter asked: "Hey Paul, d'you mind if I take her for a while? We have a conversation in hand." "Sure, we were just ending ours anyway." She studied him once more. He was hesitating over letting go. Was he actually upset? As they left she whispered to his ear: "It's okay, we'll talk later." He turned around to see her walking out with Damon by her side. "Those two are on to something." Paul noticed Mick looking the same direction. "Do you really think so?" His voice sounded distressed, yes, with no attempt to hide it. His friend shrugged off. "What do I know, was just saying."

They walked together in silence, taking note of everything that occured around them. It was Melissa who broke the ice. "What was that conversation you wanted to have with me?" Damon got confused for a second. "Oh that. Nah it was just for Paul to leave you alone...and to be with you." "He wasn't bothering me, we were just talking." "I don't mind the talking but I don't like your constantly being together." "He's just a friend...wait, jealous much?" "I...I, I wouldn't say jealous, I just don't like it when you spend much time with him, or with other men for instance." "Aww Damon, you're jealous." Why deny it? "It's what you make me feel." His naturally deep voice lowered when expressing this, which made Melissa's stomach quiver by such statement. He made her cease her stride. She sensed something important taking place. "Melissa, ever since I met you, and I refer to that night after the Jools Holland gig, you've made quite an impression in me which has had me think of you most of the time. There's something about you I can't describe but nevertheless it's there, and whatever it is, it feels nice. All I'm certain of is that I like you, very much. And something tells me you feel the same, I can see it right through you." Melissa was...well, not exactly surprised since she admitted to be expecting this. Such declaration was not exactly what she hoped for but she didn't mind it, for she sensed what was about to occur. "Yes, I feel the same way." That was all he needed to hear. He grabbed her face and pulled her closer to him. The kiss was passionate, given with confidence, lips devouring into each corner of their mouths. None had to direct the other, both grabbed hands while advancing to the mobile home which was Damon's dressing room during the festival. Once inside they kept kissing, not a long time passing by when they started removing their clothes. Damon tried remaining steady but it was impossible, Melissa's curvy physique driving him so mad he was too aroused to fight back. Their lovemaking was vigorous, each thrust making her whimper in pleasure. She reduced her moans just as his slim figure quickened his rhythm, not wishing to be discovered by passersby. When it was over he laid behind her, their bodies exhausted and drenched in sweat. Damon smiled down on her just as he caressed her features and kissed her mouth. Melissa returned the gesture as she positioned herself on his chest, receiving his warm embrace while they both drifted into sleep.

She was chatting with some friends she encountered a few minutes ago, ecstatic to see them after months of not going out with them. Plans were made to go watch The Dead Weather's performance in less than nothing while toying around like the youthful adults they were. The day was bright and sunny, the one thing she hated had it not been for yesterday night. It had been wonderful, sensuous. She spun around to where Damon was standing, smiling flirtingly while he responded the same way. He watched her from a certain distance, keeping himself away from the sun by staying below shadows. "God, she's amazing!" he exclaimed out loud. "Who's amazing?" Mick wandered by, with Paul beside him, when he heard Damon mutter said affirmation. "What...? Oh nothing, nevermind." "Well that was informative. Oh look, there's Melissa." The three men observed the young woman talking joyfully with the other girls. Again she turned to see Damon, showing that enchanting beam of hers. Paul observed it and looked at Damon. He had the same exact expression. Jesus Christ, did something happen between them last night? "Are you alright mate?" Mick eyed him curiously, Paul's reaction being unusual in him. Luckily Damon didn't listen, too captivated by Melissa's charm. "Yeah I'm fine." Except he wasn't. Oh no he was not.

Episode 4: More than Meets the Eye

The mild wind took away some of the spring heat. Turquoise waters crashed with the sand and all on its way. The mid May sun illuminated the city in all of its splendor, already brightened by the heap of actors and celebrities attending the famous film festival. Not a direct part of the gala, Gorillaz however were scheduled to appear on a special edition of a well known French television show to be held in the midst of it. This was Melissa's first time in France and considering her present situation, she was bound to enjoy the experience at its best. Who knew if she would ever come back.

Since she was there as a guest and not as a roadie she was free to go wherever she wanted. Which is why after viewing the band's soundcheck she decided to have a walk on the beach. Funnily enough Melissa was no fan of sunny weather, being born in a coastal town constantly facing extreme temperatures. Twenty four summers later it was more than enough and off she hopped on a plane to Britain hoping to never return to Mexico, or at the very least go away for a long time. There was more than just the climate issues but she decided to limit her thoughts to these. Such a place was worth visiting and time ran fast so all she wanted was to savor the scenery, just the sea and her. Nothing could improve that flicker of peaceful solitude.

Melissa contemplated the horizon while sitting over the sand, its powdery texture blending with the softness of her skin. She noticed someone swimming in the water but paid little attention, instead opening her book to read once more for a while. So interesting was the storyline, she didn't spot the swimmer emerging from the sea, rubbing his eyes to remove the saltiness accumulated on them. He was a tall and lean figure, subtly golden by the sun and with just enough muscle tone to be considered a man of strength. He was walking the opposite way but instead went towards Melissa at the sight of her. "Enjoying your reading?" She raised up her gaze at the sound of that light, soothing voice she was getting used to. "Oh hey, didn't know you were here." Paul Simonon blurt out a chuckle and added: "You would know if you weren't so absorbed in your book." "What can I say? It's a really fascinating story." Another short laugh and he was invited to sit down.

"So, have you enjoyed Cannes this far?" "I have. It's much more gorgeous than in pictures. Have you come here before?" "No, it's my first time here, but I've been to Paris several times." "Nice! Must be exciting to go there regularly. There's always something new to discover in Paris." "Have you gone there?" "Paris? Nah, not yet." Paul stared at the ocean for a few seconds in silence, time during which Melissa observed him. He was really good looking, one of the most handsome men she had ever seen and she had spotted several during her time in London. Merely his profile revealed smooth, masculine features, the narrow, long jawline hidden through a three-day beard, big surly eyes and a straight nose along with the fine mouth. He was a most perfect image of male beauty and he clearly knew it, always wearing the ideal clothes to enhance it. She set her eyes inevitably to his upper body, at that moment clothed with a polo shirt, notably well-built due to exercise even with a thin physique. Melissa became uneasy, a warm wave rushing in her at the sight of such a firm structure capable of giving much pleasure regardless of age. She couldn't help imagine being that fortunate receiver. She shrugged off her lustful observations just as he asked: "Didn't you mention you come from a town by the beach as well?" "Yes, a beach town I wanna leave behind as much as possible, if not forever." "Really? Why? Problems back home?" "...Family issues mostly. And not fitting in also." There was an uncomfortable silence which Melissa interrupted by elucidating: "The thing is, apart from being bullied at school, which I already got over, I never felt identified with people I knew from years, not even with my own relatives. Not only do I have different artistic tastes and such, but our views on life are so distant from each other and obviously I felt so apart from everyone. That's why I didn't have any friends back home, maybe acquaintances but not even remotely close to a friendship. Imagine living somewhere in which everyone's a dog and you're a cat, to give a vague example. I mean, you're pretty much fucked up." "Yes, I can imagine how lonely you felt. And it's unfair 'cause you seem like such a lovely young lady from what we've spoken." His voice was conforting even when the next statement was spoken in a loud whisper: "And I must say, a really pretty one as well. I bet you've had lots of boys knocking on your door." Melissa gave him a look, one which expressed incredulity. "Ha, not even close. I used to be overweight; well, still are to some extent, but since I was considered a fat freak, no one wanted to hang out with me, especially boys. I shouldn't complain though; ever since I arrived in London I've met several worthy guys but nothing serious." "I'm sure there must be someone out there who'll sweep you off your feet." "I hope so." She gave out this answer with a dreamy gaze to the distance, which made Paul wonder if in that party of blokes, she had already met that special someone.

The television appearance was as outstanding as expected. Lots of people attended the live broadcast and cheered enthusiastically for the band at all times. A couple of songs from the new album were played, an interview with Damon included. Even with the language barrier it appears he enjoyed the animated chat between the presenters, all hyped due to the film festival craze. With the French Riviera as background, their performance was basically the icing on the cake for everyone present.

After the show was done everybody went out to dinner and later took a short walk on the streets of Cannes. Once back in the hotel they all headed straight to their rooms. All but Mick and Paul, who decided to have a quick smoke and a few drinks at the bar by the lobby. They chatted nonstop on their current standpoints concerning the band and their lives, evidently relishing that sweet interval. They were minding their own business when in a casual glance, Paul noticed Melissa entering the lobby looking even more beautiful than he had seen her before. By her outfit he guessed she would go out, normal considering her age. Awe took over logic as he couldn't keep his eyes away from her, taking in the vision of grace she was. Excusing himself to Mick, he walked to the lobby to greet her.

"My God, you look gorgeous dear." He watched her closely. Was she blushing? "Thanks", she replied timidly. Her head bent downwards, her shyness rising since she wasn't used to compliments. Paul lifted her chin, looking her straight in the eyes while stating: "Hey, never be ashamed of your beauty. You deserve to be admired, especially after much criticism, don't you think?" Melissa still looked a bit hesitant but her grin assured him she accepted his advice. "So, you're going out?" "Yeah, just somewhere calm since we already had dinner you know." "Yes of course. Besides it's Cannes: you just have to go out and see the city." "Duh, obviously." They both laughed and Paul suggested: "Just try not to be out for too long. I mean a young woman alone on the street is an easy prey you know." "It's ok, I'll be fine..." "Hey, ready to go?" Damon appeared beside them more groomed than usual. "Yeah, I just got down here." She turned to Paul and said matter-of-factly: "Rest assured, I'm not going out alone as you can see." "Oh...well, even better. Have fun and you, take good care of her ok?" Damon exhaled a cackle and replied: "Yes daddy, she'll be alright with me." The three of them waved goodbye, Damon smiling adoringly at Melissa who reacted the same way.

As Paul returned to the bar Mick asked: "Were those Damon and Melissa leaving?" "What...? Uh yeah, it was them." Mick let out a sigh and murmured: "Ahh, the beauty of youth." Paul heard him and nodded but didn't respond, his mind too numb to ellicit any reply. Was Damon fancying Melissa? In case it was true it didn't surprise him, his apology being so sudden coming from him. And even more, did she like him? The way they looked at each other while leaving... It was all none of his concern but he couldn't help being upset. Whatever it was they felt mutually, he did not like it one bit.

Episode 3: Pleased To Meet You

The sound of the doorbell interrupted his painting. It was a bright and sunny afternoon, a rare thing in London considering its famed hazy climate. While any given person would still be working on that part of the day, everyone else he knew of their circle would be having a rest after hours of either rehearsing or recording. In his case painting took up most of his spare time when music was his top priority, which was what was going on for him currently. He enjoyed it as well as being really good at it. So it did not come as a surprise when he became a bit upset over being interrupted. But he immediately recalled him saying on the phone he just had to talk to him about something important. Much had occured between them over the past years that had been resolved only months ago, and for that reason he knew he had to be there for his good friend. Which is why he left his annoyance aside while opening the door.

"Hello Graham, I hope I didn't interrupt you..." "I must get used to it but anyway mate, you said it was important so come on in." Damon Albarn ushered himself in and sat on the couch while Graham Coxon fixed some tea for them. Once it was done he sat down as well while asking: "So, what happened that has you searching for my help?" "Right, so I was wondering, do you remember this girl that came along with us on tour last year?" "A girl...um describe." "Dark hair, brown eyes, young and quite pretty. She was a roadie but traveled with us, in fact was most of the time around us. Oh, Melissa is her name." "Oh right, Melissa! Of course I remember her. Hard to miss in fact, always chatting with us or people before the shows. One of a kind, that girl. And yes, quite the looker." Yes well, now that I played on Jools Holland I saw her right after the gig and she told me she knew me from last year...and idiotically I said no." "Why did you say you don't remember her when you do?" "Because I remembered her several minutes later, and now I want to apologize to her." Graham became skeptical. Damon's not the kind of person who regrets what he says, and when apologizing it's only to people he knows and cares for. This sudden urge to ask for forgiveness to an acquaintance made him wonder what his real intentions were. "Damon, are you looking to apologize or is it something else? 'Cause I know you and you don't apologize to anyone." "I'm telling you, I feel really bad for my rudeness and especially after knowing she joined us on tour and how nice she was to us, well, I think I owe it to her." "...And?" "What do you mean 'and'?" "You said she's pretty." "Well she is..." "Don't you mean you've started fancying her?" "Graham, I just met her..." "And you already want to see her again very badly. Yes, I'd say you're smitten with her." There was nothing to deny. Graham knew him so well it was impossible to hide the simple truth from him. Hence why he kept silent for several seconds as his friend nodded slowly. "And what do you want from me on all this?" "By any chance do you have her phone number? I have an idea..."

People wandered in and out of the lobby to different directions. It was a fancy hotel, one Melissa had never seen before even after several months of living in the city. One she would've never entered had it not been for Graham's phone call yesterday. It was nice to receive news from her pal after their last lunch together one month ago. She was looking forward to see him again but it seemed very strange. Having drinks in a five-star hotel wasn't his style. A local bar sounded more like him. Why would he want to chat in such a place? Location withstanding, she felt pleased to join him for a friendly nightout as reward for a grueling week at work.

"Hi Melissa." Jamie Hewlett was the first person she saw when turning around. "Jamie! Hi! Good to see you!" "I'm pleased as well, how've you been?" As they hugged each other she thought: "What a weird coincidence to find him here as I'm about to see his ex friend." Or was it? "I've been fine. Struggling at work, but fine. How about you?" "Oh you know, just enjoying the moment." He immediately spun his head while explaining: "Hey, I don't believe you've been introduced formally." It was then when she heard Jamie's voice announce: "Melissa, this is Damon; Damon, this is Melissa." Even in her surprise, she remained calm while shaking hands with him. "Nice to meet you." There was a touch of awkwardness in the low, husky voice, something that expressed embarassment over his bad manners the other day. "Have we met?" For a moment he was stunned, left speechless. Was she so hurt she decided to give him the cold shoulder? In an attempt to display his good will he smiled at her and gently removed a strand of hair from her forehead. Her teasing grin and subsequent laugh proved the contrary: all was forgiven and forgotten. In the middle of this lapse of complicity, Jamie was a mere outsider. "Right, I better dash. My work here is done."

Once they were seated in the hotel bar Melissa asked: "So what did Graham have to do with all of this?" Damon looked at the floor in guilt. "Let's say he made this encounter possible. Had it not been for him having your phone number we wouldn't be here." "Yes, but you didn't call me." "Well I wasn't sure you would accept my apology. Besides it would've taken off the shock factor." "Oh come on, knock it off Mr. Albarn." Damon burst into laughter. Very few fans kept their cool when being around him. This girl clearly belonged to such minority. For that he liked her right away. He also did not expect her next move. "A Coke? We're in a bar and you just ordered a Coke?" "I don't drink. If I can, I avoid alcohol as much as possible." Quite the healthy kind, was Damon's thought. Or maybe a good girl all around?

The conversation moved on to their backgrounds. Damon became far more interested when Melissa told him she was Mexican. Being a traveling enthusiast, he made questions of its culture and idiosyncrasy. He wondered why leaving such a fascinating country for this dingy, lonely island. Always meant to come here, she answered. London is full of life and art, something her hometown lacks. She was honest too and admitted to be drawn by its vibrant music scene. Yes, she had been a roadie for a few independent bands but only sporadically. Her income depended on her main source: as a receptionist for a law firm. Such a boring job no one asks about it and it's all the better since there's nothing much to tell. After that they spoke of much more subjects: art, music, cinema, basically things they loved. Both clearly had great taste. In a moment Damon excused himself to go to the restroom and Melissa had a few minutes to take out the book she was currently reading. Barely one and a half page was read when she heard a soft-spoken man's voice ask in wondered tone: "Melissa? Is that you?"

No other than Paul Simonon was standing beside her, pleasantly astonished to see that young woman on the same hotel they were staying at. What was she doing there? The reason didn't matter. He was delighted to see her darling face after meeting her certain days behind. "Oh hey, how's it going?" "I'm quite fine dear. 'Tis lovely to see you again. Pardon my intrusion but what are you doing here?" "Damon invited me over to apologize for not recognizing me the other day when I approached him." "Recognizing you? Did you know each other already?" "Yeah, from last year. I was a roadie for Blur and we met there. We chatted a few times." "Small world eh." He was only planning to grab a quick drink and go to his room but seeing Melissa and knowing Damon was somewhere around, he ultimately had second thoughts. "Mind if I take a seat?" "No, go ahead." She secretly wished to be left alone with Damon but of course didn't say it out loud, would've been rather rude of her. In addition that man seemed nice enough to strike up a conversation with while waiting for the former. "So, what are you reading?" "A novel called The Mozart Season. It's about a young violonist rehearsing for a competition and how the events in her life affect both her practicing and herself." "Sounds interesting. Are you an avid reader?" " I love reading, it's one of my favorite things to do." "Funny you mention it because I'm currently reading...sorry, mind if I smoke?" "Um no, it's okay." He extracted a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, grabbed one and offered Melissa. "Oh, no thanks, I don't smoke." "I'm glad to hear that." She wondered what he meant with that.

"How's the chat going?" Damon playfully interrupted them on his way back from the restroom. "Hey welcome back. Paul said hi and asked to sit down. Is it okay with you?" "Of course it is, Paul is always welcome to join." And off they continued with the gathering. With Paul's arrival even more topics were discussed, making time go by at full speed. Melissa felt comfortable among those two men who looked more like brothers than good friends, being not only identical physically but also in points of view. They seemed to be responding favorably as well by what she observed. In a time Paul asked: "I hope you're not bothered Melissa, but how old are you?" "I'm 25." "Dear God, you're so young!" he exclaimed lowering his voice. "Why did you think I'd be bothered?" "Well you're a lady and as such we're not supposed to ask your age." Melissa let out a chuckle and replied, "I am so far away from being a lady, believe me. Plus, age is just a number. It doesn't reflect your maturity, life does it." "That's certainly true." Paul's thoughts started racing. "Cultured, fairly witted, beautiful and young. What a tremendous combination."

Once she was gone they were free to speak of her. "So, what do you think?" Paul's response was made at once. "How is it you didn't remember her back then? It's impossible to forget someone like that. I certainly wouldn't." "In other words, you liked her as well." "She's great, and she's utterly adorable. Never thought she would enjoy the company of two middle-aged blokes but there you go." "Paul, I'm not middle-aged." "You know what I mean. But my goodness, she's awfully young..." "So what if she's 25? She looked at ease with us older blokes. In fact, such good impression she left, I've invited her to the Cannes gig." Paul's blue eyes involuntarily opened wide upon such news. His speech remained calm all the same. "Really? When did you invite her?" "Just as I walked her out. Besides, it's part of my apology." "Did she accept?" "About thirty seconds later, yes." And in his excitement, Damon did not realize he wasn't the only one looking forward to see Melissa again.

Backstage Blues//Episode 2: Encounters

The streets were full of eager fans waiting for their entrance to the set. Later...With Jools Holland was considered one of the best television shows in the country due to its wide variety of both local and international artists. Lucky were those who received an invitation to perform there. No matter their independent or mainstream condition, to appear on such program was enough to either form or cement credibility. As members of the latter, Gorillaz had nothing to prove considering their recent supergroup status, rather to allow their followers to enjoy this public phase in the band.

If the album was all about high quality, the live performance was exponentially better. Every musician was in top form on their respective part, all outstandingly led by Damon Albarn as the core and founding member. In reference to the album's naval concept, the whole band wore matching attire: from striped shirts to sailor hats, all set to bring the Plastic Beach experience to life. Within their concentration, they were thrilled to be there, the signs of camaraderie clearly showing among them. Meanwhile the audience seemed to respond slowly but surely to this new chapter in Gorillaz's history. Alas, having well known music icons helped considerably.

Melissa was simply amazed at the surroundings, the idea of a television set quite unfamiliar yet fascinating. Being much more accustomed to concerts, it never crossed her mind to ever attend a live taping. Not even if one of her favorite bands appeared on it. But this time was different. She had been waiting for over a month for this day to come. And she was finally on the front row seeing him answer questions with his friend and collaborator sitting beside him. She'd been trying during the whole show to gain his attention with no success. At that instant she was flashing her best smile in order to be noticed. And she was noticed alright. She felt someone looking at her intently, beaming and avoiding everyone else around despite being surrounded by others. After studying the stranger out of the corner of her eye, Melissa finally recognized him as the band's bass player. Out of courtesy she smiled back but turned her focus immediately to the lead singer and his answers.

A satisfying success. That is how their performance was viewed by everyone in the group. It might take some time for the public to get used to not seeing the animations as much as before but they trusted they would eventually accept this change in its totality. This was all discussed between them while they made their way to exit the set. The tiredness was clear but was disguised through smiles and acknowledgements, especially when once outside they were encompassed by dozens of fans who have been waiting for a considerable amount of time to meet their idols. For a little while they signed autographs, posed for pictures and shook hands back and forth. Damon Albarn was particularly with his hands full until a youthful, female voice kept motioning for him to please sign her CD cover. Much was her insistence he finally moved towards her. She was quite attractive, he had to admit it, with long dark brown hair, eyes the same color as well as a confident attitude while speaking. No less she claimed they knew each other from before, from Blur's reunion tour last year. He was honest and answered with an apologetic smile: "Um well I'm sorry love, but I don't quite remember you." Or did he? Now that she mentioned it, her face started to look vaguely familiar somehow. He had probably seen her somewhere but couldn't place the exact location. As Mick Jones and Paul Simonon came their way he stepped aside so the girl could speak to them. Sure enough she stretched out her hand as she said: "Hi guys, I'm Melissa, nice meeting ya." "Likewise dear", Mick answered back. She waited for the CD cover to be signed and noticed the other man staring at her, all smiles. She recalled him from awhile back, the same who kept looking her way during the taping. A very handsome chap indeed: tall, short dark blond hair, blue eyes, his smile revealed two front crooked teeth which added a boyish charm to his elegant persona. "Well Melissa, I hope we get to see you again someday." His voice was rather...child-like was the word? She didn't expect it from such a good looking, classy older man but she didn't care, it was rather sweet. With Damon in her mind, she responded: "Yeah, I hope so too." The CD cover was finally signed and off they rushed to the vehicle which waited for the band. Melissa waved goodbye to them, inevitably feeling disappointed over her failure.

"Yes, I've seen that girl before, but where?" Damon kept searching through his memories from last year with no answer. She seemed very assured of their knowing each other and yet he couldn't place her. Where did he meet her? On the street? On a show? Backstage somewhere? For starters, what did she say her name is? Melissa she mentioned. "Where and when the fuck did I see you? You do look familiar." It wasn't until several more minutes that it dawned on him: a female roadie helping the crew with the equipment, accompanying the band on tour, speaking with either fans or musicians. He did get to say hi to her but it was just sporadically, being too busy with their schedule they didn't get to chat that much. Such a shame, she was nice enough, at least from what he saw with Graham and the others. Now that he remembered her he knew he had to apologize for his rudeness. He didn't know how or when, but he was determined to do so.
